February 22, 2008 - Handicap Stroke Allocation

A review of the mens handicap stroke allocation has been made and there are some changes in the allocation of handicap strokes. The process of the stroke allocation followed recommended USGA procedures and we also utilized hole by hole score analysis from scores posted using USGA guidelines to gather that information. The observation that stroke allocation is an exact guideline from 1-18 on what are the toughest holes is not true in this process, it is a factor but not the primary basis for the stroke allocation. A more accurate statement from the USGA Handbook is "In allocating the order of handicap strokes to the 18 holes of a golf course, consideration should be given to the likelihood of the strokes being equalizers rather than winning strokes." Additonal guidelines are then factored in and that is the basic process. Complete guidelines are availabe for your review on the USGA website if you are interested.
